Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has decided to drop the term 'Olympics' from the name of its school sports meet, which aims to become the largest sports festival for students in Asia. Previously called the School Olympics, the event will now be referred to as the Kerala School Sports Meet.

This change comes in response to regulations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which restricts the use of the word 'Olympics' in various contexts. As a result, the Kerala education department has chosen to rename the event to comply with these rules. Future promotional materials and official documents related to the fair will reflect this change. It will now be known as ‘Kerala School Kayika Mela in Olympics Model Kochi-24.’

The term 'Olympics' is a registered trademark protected under the Olympic Charter, and its use for personal gain is prohibited. The IOC also requires approval for any event that includes the word 'Olympics' alongside other terms like the Olympics rings and Olympics flag.

To ensure compliance, the government has reached out to the Indian Olympic Association to seek permission for any use of the term 'Olympics' in conjunction with the Meet.
