Kollam: Employees at the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) are experiencing pressure and threats from higher officials to achieve income targets at depots. Those who fail to meet these targets are reportedly facing intimidation from higher authorities.

A voice message from the District Transport Officer (DTO) of Pathanamthitta, directed at the Ranni Depot, has been circulating widely among employees on WhatsApp. In this message, the DTO urged staff to “better drive and earn money,” following a drop in revenue from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh.

The DTO stressed that employees should not operate buses without generating income. “Employees are not supposed to just drive the bus and waste diesel! You better take more passengers and generate income. Don’t you feel any shame bringing only Rs 12,000 as income? No need for any justification as well!”

As part of this pressure, depot authorities have been told they will not be allowed to take leave unless their buses guarantee a fixed income. There are also threats of salary deductions for any shortfall, adding to the stress of employees who are already struggling with delayed salary payments. Officers and workshop staff in loss-making units can only receive leave with prior approval from the Managing Director.

Many employees are concerned about how KSRTC buses, some over 15 years old, can compete with private buses that offer better amenities. The corporation has not acquired new buses or permits, leaving staff feeling frustrated.

The corporation does not provide any support or protection for employees in disputes with private bus operators as well.
