Celebrating 50 years of cinematic magic, Rajinikanth’s blockbuster Padayappa returns to theatres worldwide in a fully remastered 4K edition

Padayappa, one of the most iconic films in Tamil cinema, is set to make a spectacular comeback in theatres this December. To mark Superstar Rajinikanth’s 75th birthday, the 1999 blockbuster — celebrating 25 years — has been fully remastered in 4K resolution and enhanced with a modern sound system, promising a fresh cinematic experience for both old and new fans.
Directed by K.S. Ravikumar and scored by A.R. Rahman, Padayappa originally released on Tamil New Year’s Day, April 10, 1999, and became a massive success, running for over 150 days in theatres across India. The film’s ensemble cast includes legendary actors such as Sivaji Ganesan, Soundarya, Ramya Krishnan, Senthil, Manivannan, and Abbas. It was produced under Arunachala Cine Creations by K. Sathya Narayana, M.V. Krishna Rao, and K. Vittal Prasad, with P.L. Thenappan as co-producer.

Soundarya Rajinikanth, the superstar’s daughter, shared the announcement on her social media, noting that this re-release is a tribute to her father’s unparalleled 50-year journey in cinema. Fans have been eagerly anticipating the return, as the film had not been telecast on television for several years.
The re-release of Padayappa in 4K is scheduled worldwide on December 12, 2025, aligning with Rajinikanth’s birthday celebrations. The remastered visuals and upgraded audio are expected to introduce the classic film to a new generation while giving longtime fans a chance to relive its cinematic magic in theatres.
