Learn how to safely cut, pit, slice, and scoop an avocado with this easy step-by-step guide. Avoid common kitchen injuries and prepare avocados like a pro

Avocados have become a kitchen favorite thanks to their creamy texture, rich flavor, and impressive nutritional benefits. Whether you're making toast, salads, sandwiches, or guacamole, knowing how to cut and slice an avocado properly is essential. However, the large pit and slippery flesh can make the process tricky if you're not careful. Follow this simple step-by-step guide to safely prepare an avocado like a pro.
- Prepare a Stable Cutting Surface:
Put a sturdy cutting board on your kitchen counter to get started. To prevent the board from slipping while you work, place a damp kitchen towel underneath it. A stable surface helps reduce the risk of accidents.

- Choose a ripe avocado:
Pick a ripe avocado that, when gently pressed, yields slightly. Cutting a softer avocado is safer and simpler because less force is needed.
- Slice around the pit:
Hold the avocado firmly as you place it on the cutting board. Make a tiny incision close to the stem with a sharp knife, then cut lengthwise around the fruit, rotating it as you go until the pit is completely covered.
- Separate the halves:
Gently twist the avocado in opposing directions while holding both sides. The pit should be in one half after the two halves separate with ease.
- Remove the pit safely:
On the cutting board, firmly place the avocado half with the pit. Remove the pit with a spoon, being careful. When using a knife, move carefully and deliberately.
- Slice or dice the flesh:
Place half of the avocado on the chopping board. Make lengthwise slices or crosswise cuts for cubes, stopping just before the knife reaches the skin. This helps create neat pieces without damaging the peel.
- Scoop out the avocado:
Slice or cube the skin and gently scoop it with a spoon. Now you can use the avocado in guacamole, toast, salads, sandwiches, and other recipes.
