Apple’s latest iPhone 17 series has received a strong response in India, with pre-bookings surpassing those of the iPhone 16 during its launch period. According to industry sources, the new lineup is expected to account for 15–20 per cent of total iPhone sales, setting up a potentially robust Diwali quarter for the company despite supply constraints on the Pro models.

Strong demand for pro models and new variants

Analysts noted that demand for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is particularly high, raising concerns about supply shortages in the initial weeks. Retailers said that base models will be widely available, while Pro and Pro Max variants, making up only about 10 per cent of initial deliveries, are facing limited allocation, leading to black-market premiums of 10–20 per cent.

The base variant has been upgraded to 256GB storage, which analysts say improves its value compared to last year’s entry model. The “Cosmic Orange” colour has emerged as the most popular choice among pre-booking customers.

Pricing starts at ₹82,900 for the iPhone 17 (256GB), while the new iPhone Air, a slimmer model, begins at ₹1,19,900. The iPhone 17 Pro (256GB) is listed at ₹1,34,900, and the top-end iPhone 17 Pro Max (256GB) comes in at ₹1,49,900.

India emerging as key growth market

Total iPhone shipments in India are expected to surpass 5 million units in Q3 2025, compared to 4 million units in the same quarter last year. The iPhone 16 was India’s best-selling model in the first half of 2025, driving nearly 97 per cent growth in the premium smartphone category.

Apple has recently strengthened its retail footprint in India with new stores in Bengaluru and Pune, underlining the country’s growing importance to the company’s global strategy. India is also central to Apple’s manufacturing push, with one in every five iPhones now being produced locally.

In contrast, Apple’s largest overseas market, China, grew just 4.4 per cent in the June quarter following two years of decline.
