US President Donald Trump announced an agreement aimed at ending the conflict with Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz just hours before hosting an unprecedented UFC event on the White House lawn

US President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement intended to end the conflict that has disrupted global energy markets for months.
In a social media post, Trump declared that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen and that the US naval blockade would be removed, saying ships could once again pass through one of the world's most important energy corridors.

The agreement, expected to be formally signed in Switzerland later this week, is being presented by the White House as a major diplomatic achievement after a conflict that pushed oil prices sharply higher and triggered concerns about inflation and energy security across the world.
A deal announced, but many details remain unclear
Despite the announcement, significant uncertainty remains.
Neither Washington nor Tehran has released the full text of the agreement. Iranian officials have suggested that some measures, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz, may not take effect until the deal is formally signed.
Questions also remain over how Iran's nuclear programme will be monitored, who will oversee compliance, and what will happen to Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
Even some Trump allies have expressed caution. Lindsey Graham said Congress would need to review any nuclear agreement and voiced concern that Iran's public interpretation of the deal appeared different from the American version.
Global economic stakes remain high
The conflict has had consequences far beyond the Middle East.
The Strait of Hormuz normally carries around one-fifth of global oil supplies. Disruptions to shipping routes contributed to rising fuel prices, increased insurance costs for tankers and renewed inflation concerns in many countries.
Energy analysts have warned that even if the agreement succeeds, it could take months before oil and gas supplies return to normal levels. Shipping companies, insurers and energy producers are likely to seek evidence that the ceasefire is durable before fully resuming operations.
For major energy importers such as India, the reopening of Hormuz could eventually reduce import costs and ease pressure on fuel prices, but any benefits are likely to emerge gradually rather than immediately.
White House turns into UFC arena
The diplomatic announcement came just hours before an extraordinary event at the White House.
To mark Trump's 80th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the White House hosted UFC Freedom 250, a mixed martial arts event featuring seven fights on the South Lawn.
The event transformed one of the most recognisable symbols of American government into a sporting venue, complete with an Octagon cage, championship fights and thousands of spectators.
American fighter Justin Gaethje defeated Spanish-Georgian champion Ilia Topuria in the headline bout, while French heavyweight Ciryl Gane claimed an interim title victory over Brazilian fighter Alex Pereira.
Critics question timing and symbolism
The event generated criticism alongside celebration.
Supporters viewed the UFC card as a patriotic celebration combining sport, national identity and a milestone presidential birthday. Trump and UFC president Dana White have maintained a close relationship for years, making the White House event a symbolic extension of that partnership.
Critics, however, questioned the timing.
The conflict with Iran had become increasingly unpopular with many American voters, while high fuel prices and inflation continued to affect households. Some observers argued that the spectacle risked drawing attention away from unresolved economic and foreign policy concerns.
Political analysts noted that major public events have often been used by leaders throughout history to create moments of national unity, celebration or distraction during difficult political periods. Critics of the White House event drew comparisons with that historical pattern, while supporters rejected suggestions that the UFC card was intended to divert attention from policy challenges.
G7 leaders seek answers
Trump now heads to the G7 summit in France with what the White House hopes will be diplomatic momentum.
However, several allied leaders are expected to seek clarification about the agreement's terms, implementation timetable and enforcement mechanisms.
French President Emmanuel Macron has indicated that the Iran agreement, the future of the Strait of Hormuz and regional security will be central topics during discussions among world leaders.
The coming days may determine whether the agreement marks the beginning of a lasting settlement or simply a temporary pause in a conflict that has already reshaped global energy markets and affected millions of people far beyond the battlefield.
