Washington: US President Donald Trump has floated the idea of renaming the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait”, even as tensions remain high over the key waterway amid the ongoing war involving the United States, Iran and Israel.

“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be 'hotter' than ever before!” Trump said on his Truth Social network on Wednesday.

The suggestion marks the latest geographical renaming proposal from Trump. It comes about a week after he ordered Lake Ontario to be referred to as “Lake America” amid an escalating trade dispute with Canada.

Trump had also renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” shortly after returning to the White House in January 2025. Neither Mexico nor Canada has accepted the respective name changes.

Several of Trump's previous proposals initially emerged as seemingly light-hearted comments before being followed by efforts to formally implement them.

Trump claims US control over Strait

Trump has repeatedly threatened in recent weeks to assert US sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. He has also shared a map portraying the strategic waterway as a “new US territory”.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most important oil transit routes, with around one-fifth of global oil supplies passing through the narrow waterway.

Iran has effectively shut the strategic chokepoint in retaliation for the war launched by Trump alongside Israel in late February, according to the report.

Fresh US strikes push oil prices higher

Oil prices have risen again following fresh US military strikes near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.

The strikes came after Trump said Iran had resumed efforts to lay mines in the strategic waterway, further escalating tensions around one of the world's most critical energy routes.

The latest developments have added to concerns over global oil supplies and the potential economic fallout from any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.
