Taipei: Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) said it detected five sorties of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft and eight People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels operating around Taiwan up to 6 am (UTC+8) on Monday.

According to the MND, all five aircraft sorties crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s southwestern air defence identification zone (ADIZ). The ministry said it monitored the situation and responded accordingly.

The development followed similar activity reported a day earlier. On Sunday, the MND said four PLA aircraft sorties and seven PLAN vessels were detected around Taiwan up to 6 am (UTC+8). Of these, two aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s central and southwestern ADIZ. The ministry again stated that it tracked the movements and responded.

On Friday, Taiwan reported a sharper increase in activity, with 23 PLA aircraft sorties detected along with PLAN vessels. Of these, 17 aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern, central and southwestern ADIZ while conducting what the MND described as air-sea joint training with Chinese naval vessels. The aircraft involved included multiple types, such as J-10 fighters, H-6K bombers and KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft.

Earlier the same day, the MND had also reported the detection of 11 PLA aircraft sorties and five PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan up to 6 am local time. In a separate development, Taiwan’s defence ministry said a Chinese surveillance drone entered the southwestern section of Taiwan’s ADIZ in the early hours and moved towards the Pratas Islands, also known as Dongsha.

Taiwan routinely reports such military movements, which it says form part of ongoing pressure by China, which claims Taiwan as its territory. The MND has reiterated that Taiwan’s armed forces closely monitor all activities around the island and respond as necessary to safeguard national security.
