Pathanamthitta: A new system will allow devotees to view Ayyappa as soon as they reach the Pathinettampadi (18 holy steps) at the Sabarimala Sannidhanam. This change will come into effect on March 14, with the opening of the temple for the monthly (Meenam) pooja, marking a major shift in the darshan process at the temple.

Under the new system, devotees will no longer need to climb the steps, turn left, and queue on the flyover for the darshan. Instead, they will be able to view Ayyappa by passing through either side of the flagpole before proceeding via the Balikkalpura.

The new system allows devotees to pause and bow before Ayyappa for at least 30 seconds, offering a more meaningful darshan experience. This change also addresses previous complaints about the rush at the platform, where devotees could only get a fleeting glimpse of Ayyappa for two or three seconds.

Clearer pathways and no congestion

The revised system ensures smoother flow by separating the lanes for devotees. A long ‘kanikka vanchi’ (offering receptacle) will divide the two sides, with those coming from the left side reaching a slightly elevated platform for darshan, while those from the right side will be at ground level. This separation aims to avoid mixing and congestion, allowing for a more orderly flow of devotees as they proceed towards the shrine.

Both lanes will eventually meet at the main path, ensuring that devotees coming from either direction will follow the same route towards the temple.

Tantri’s approval for changes

The new system has received approval from the Tantri (priest), with no changes to the temple’s traditional structure or calculations. The Tantri’s approval assures that the new procedures align with the temple's spiritual and cultural guidelines. The High Court has also sanctioned the plan, after thorough analysis by a special committee, including Special Commissioner R Jayakrishnan, Board President P S Prashanth, and other key officials.

Maintenance of flyover

The flyover, built in 1989, will continue to be maintained as part of the new system. In cases of overcrowding, such as during emergency situations or when the queue extends to Marakkoottam, devotees will be directed to the flyover. This will prevent any difficulties that previously occurred when devotees had to pass through the Balikkalpura, which was found to be unscientific and inefficient.

Construction for the new system will begin shortly after March 17, following the approval of the new layout.
