Thiruvananthapuram: Rainfall across parts of Kerala is delivering much‑needed respite from prolonged heat, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues yellow weather alerts and forecasts isolated heavy showers over the next 24–48 hours.

Following days of scorching summer temperatures in many districts, widespread rain and cloud cover have begun easing the heat wave grip, particularly in north Kerala, where measurable falls have already dropped temperatures.

The IMD has sounded a yellow alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy rain between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours, for several northern districts including Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. Isolated heavy showers are also possible in Thrissur and Palakkad over the next few hours.

Forecasters have also cautioned about the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 km/h, which could lead to localised disruptions.

IMD weather risks & safety tips

The IMD has highlighted that even isolated heavy rainfall can cause:

  • Poor visibility and travel delays due to waterlogging
  • Traffic disruptions from fallen trees or flooded roads
  • Damage to crops and power infrastructure
  • Increased risk of landslides in vulnerable hill regions
  • Lightning strikes and strong thunderstorm activity

Meteorologists advise residents and travellers to stay updated with weather bulletins, plan for delays, and take precautions, especially in low‑lying and landslide‑prone areas.
