The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for eight districts in Kerala, warning of heavy rain, lightning and strong winds as rainfall activity intensifies across the state.

Kochi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for eight districts in Kerala as the state braces for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds over the coming days.
The alert has been issued for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Weather officials have warned that isolated areas in these districts could experience heavy rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is likely across all districts of Kerala, with wind speeds reaching up to 40 kmph in some areas. Ernakulam and Thrissur are expected to witness moderate to heavy rainfall during the forecast period.

Southern and central Kerala received moderate to heavy rainfall on Sunday, while temperatures remained largely stable across the state, ranging between 32°C and 33°C.
Authorities have cautioned that the intense weather could lead to traffic congestion, waterlogging on major roads, reduced visibility for motorists and disruptions to daily activities. There is also a risk of crop damage, partial damage to vulnerable houses and huts, and power outages caused by uprooted trees.
The IMD has further warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas, rising water levels near riverbanks and an increased risk of landslides and mudslides in vulnerable regions.
Along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast, squally weather conditions are expected with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until conditions improve.
The weather warning comes amid reports of a lightning-related fatality in Kannur. Anju Mathew, a 31-year-old employee of the Pulinyom Village Office and a native of Cherupuzha, died after being struck by lightning. Her husband Sonu Sebastian and a forest watcher identified as Saneesh sustained injuries in the incident.
Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms and closely follow weather advisories issued by authorities.
