Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala): The Central Meteorological Department has issued a severe weather warning predicting torrential rainfall across Kerala for the next five days. In response to potential flash floods and landslides, local authorities have placed multiple districts under high alert, including an immediate Red Alert for two northern districts on Tuesday.


District-wise alert levels for June 7

The weather bureau has categorised the safety risks into color-coded alerts based on the expected intensity of the rainfall.

Red alert (extremely heavy rainfall): Wayanadand and Kozhikode.
Extremely  heavy downpours are anticipated in these regions, urging residents to maintain maximum vigilance.

Orange alert (very heavy rainfall): Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod.

Isolated regions in these districts are likely to witness very heavy downpours.

Yellow alert (heavy rainfall): Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad.


Extended rainfall forecast: Warnings for Wednesday and Thursday

The monsoon is expected to sustain its momentum over the mid-week. Heavy rainfall warnings have been extended across central and northern Kerala for the following days.

  • Wednesday (June 8): Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
  • Thursday (June 9)Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

Safety advisory: State disaster management authorities have urged residents living in landslide-prone hilly terrains and low-lying coastal areas to exercise extreme caution and follow relocation guidelines if directed by local officials.
