Thiruvalla: Marthoma Church in Kerala is encouraging people to celebrate Christmas in a way that protects the environment. The church believes that firecrackers and celebrations that harm nature are not necessary for the festive season. Instead, they are promoting an eco-friendly approach by using waste materials to make Christmas trees and cribs, and encouraging environmentally conscious practices.

The Marthoma Environment Commission has taken the lead in guiding parishes towards a nature-friendly Christmas. The church plans to use simple, locally available materials to create Christmas decorations. For example, Christmas trees will be made from waste materials instead of artificial ones, and at least one Christmas song will have an environmental theme.

Suggestions for a greener Christmas

In addition to these initiatives, the church has suggested other ways to celebrate in an eco-friendly manner:

  • Use old clothes to make cloth bags and give them as Christmas gifts.
  • Avoid using non-biodegradable decorations, especially those imported from other countries.
  • Use public transport or shared vehicles to reduce carbon emissions during the holiday season.
  • During the 25 days of fasting leading up to Christmas, avoid using corporate products that harm nature.

The Marthoma Church hopes these efforts will inspire others to adopt more sustainable and eco-friendly practices during the festive season.
