As the festival of colours approaches, concerns over the harmful effects of chemical-based dyes on skin and eyes have once again come to the forefront.

In response, the Forest Department in Rajasthan’s Alwar district has taken a green initiative to promote a safer and more sustainable Holi celebration this year.

Officials have prepared nearly five quintals of herbal gulal using natural forest produce such as flowers, leaves and other plant-based materials. The eco-friendly colours are free from harmful chemicals and are designed to be gentle on the skin while also being environmentally sustainable.

The initiative aims to encourage people to shift towards natural alternatives and reduce the environmental impact typically associated with synthetic Holi colours. By utilising locally sourced forest produce, the department is also promoting awareness about sustainable resource use and traditional practices.

Holi will be celebrated on March 4, and authorities hope that revellers will embrace these herbal colours for a healthier, safer, and greener festival of colours.
