Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph on Wednesday said the party remains firmly committed to the legal process and is “closely examining” its next steps in the case of suspended MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, who is facing allegations of sexual assault.

Mamkootathil has been absconding for the past few days after police registered a sexual assault and forced abortion case against him based on a complaint submitted to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan last week by a different woman.

Joseph said the Congress believes in the legal system and, unlike the ruling LDF, “does not have its own police and judiciary.” He added that this was why the complaint he received against Mamkootathil was immediately forwarded to the Kerala DGP.

“Congress is a party that believes in the legal system. Unlike CPM, which has its own police and judiciary, Congress does not have such a system. That is why the complaint I received was forwarded to Kerala DGP,” Sunny Joseph said, adding that the party was evaluating the next steps.

He further stated that the legal process was underway and “necessary action will be taken.”

The latest allegations have also prompted senior Congress leader K Muraleedharan to call for tough action against Mamkootathil, declaring that “it is time to use the Brahmastra.”

“Now that there are written complaints before the party and the police, strong action will be taken against him. In native parlance, it is time to use the Brahmastra,” Muraleedharan said.

He noted that Mamkootathil had been suspended even before any formal complaint was filed, underscoring the party’s stance.

“Had he not been suspended from the Congress, then the party would have carried out an investigation into the allegations,” he said.

Muraleedharan also made it clear that the decision to resign as MLA rests solely with Mamkootathil.

“Once the umbilical cord is cut, the party has no role in that. The person concerned has to decide,” he said.

The senior leader added that the complainant had submitted a written petition to the KPCC chief, which has now been forwarded to the DGP for further action.

“He was given the responsibility to help the people and not engage in the activities that he is accused of,” Muraleedharan said.
