New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts for southern and northern parts of the country as the remnant of Cyclone Ditwah, now a depression, remains positioned close to the north Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast.
The system, currently located just east of Chennai, has been moving slowly southwest and is expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area within hours. Heavy rain, waterlogging, and strong winds continue across coastal districts.

Regional Impact of Cyclone Ditwah
Cyclone Ditwah has significantly affected Tamil Nadu, especially Chennai and neighbouring districts. Continuous overnight rain has resulted in severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, leading to repeated closures of schools and colleges. Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram have declared a holiday for all educational institutions for Wednesday.
Some districts remain shut due to local observances, including Karthigai Deepam in Tiruvannamalai and the St. Xavier Church Kottar Festival in Kanyakumari.
According to the IMD’s early-morning update, the depression is positioned around 100 km south of Chennai, with the centre of the system only about 25 km from the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coastline. Over the next 12–18 hours, it is expected to remain close to the coast, contributing to continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, southern coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema before gradually weakening.
Wider India Weather Outlook
The IMD has predicted that a western disturbance will impact northern mountainous regions. Cold wave conditions are expected in Punjab and north Maharashtra between 3 and 5 December and in parts of Rajasthan between 5 and 7 December. Dense fog is forecast for Himachal Pradesh, northeastern states, and Odisha over the next few days.
Temperature drops of 2–4°C are likely across northwest and central India, while eastern India may see a decline of 3–4°C. Maharashtra temperatures may fall by up to 3°C.
Delhi-NCR Pollution Update
Air quality in Delhi-NCR remains in the severe category. On Wednesday morning, the Bawana area recorded an AQI of 410, while Anand Vihar also crossed 400, posing serious health risks despite ongoing pollution-control measures.
