New Delhi: Results of the by-elections held in 12 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be declared today, with counting set to begin early Wednesday morning amid heightened security.

The bypolls—necessitated after several councillors moved to the Delhi Assembly and Parliament—were held on November 30. A total of 51 candidates, including 26 women, contested across the 12 wards.

According to the State Election Commission (SEC), the overall voter turnout stood at 38.51% by 5.30 pm on polling day.

Chandni Mahal recorded the highest participation at 55.93%. Officials reported that the polling process remained peaceful and smooth across all 580 booths.

The SEC has set up 10 counting centres in Kanjhawala, Pitampura, Bharat Nagar, Civil Lines, Rouse Avenue, Dwarka, Najafgarh, Gole Market, Pushp Vihar and Mandawali.

Each centre has been equipped with strong rooms, restricted entry, and continuous surveillance. Senior officials—including District Election Officers, Returning Officers and General Observers—are monitoring the process in coordination with security agencies.

An SEC official said the results are expected “by late morning or shortly thereafter.” Politically, today’s results are crucial for the balance of power in the 250-member MCD House. The BJP currently holds 115 councillors, AAP 99, the Indraprastha Vikas Party 15, and Congress 8.

A clean sweep of all 12 seats would take the BJP’s tally to 127, solidifying its majority and bolstering the standing of Chief Minister Gupta, especially regarding her administration’s e-bus rollout, healthcare initiatives, insurance schemes, and Chhath arrangements.

The Election Commission will upload the results on its official website ceodelhi.gov.in once counting is completed.
