New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the Rajya Sabha during the ongoing Budget Session, outlining India’s position on the escalating conflict in West Asia and its global implications. He emphasised that India’s primary objective is de-escalation of tensions and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
‘Our aim is de-escalation’: PM Modi
Highlighting India’s diplomatic stance, the Prime Minister said the country is focused on reducing tensions and ensuring stability in the region. He stressed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is critical for restoring global trade flows and energy supplies.
Modi raised concerns over Indian nationals affected by the crisis, stating that several ships remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz with a large number of Indian crew members onboard. He noted that around one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, making their safety and livelihood a key concern for the government.
The Prime Minister said the conflict, ongoing for over three weeks, has disrupted global trade routes and triggered an energy crisis. He warned that routine supplies of petrol, diesel, gas, and fertilisers have been affected, raising concerns for India’s economy and essential sectors.
Call for unity and dialogue
Modi urged members of the Upper House to send a united message in favour of peace and dialogue during the crisis. He reiterated that war is not in the interest of humanity and emphasised the importance of diplomatic solutions.
The Prime Minister’s statement comes as Parliament continues its Budget Session, which began on January 28 and will conclude on April 2. Alongside discussions on the West Asia conflict, both Houses are taking up legislative business, including the Finance Bill, committee reports, and key policy discussions.
Opposition parties have also demanded an all-party meeting on the implementation of the women’s quota law, while the government has scheduled a separate all-party meeting to discuss the Middle East situation.
Overall, India’s approach reflects a focus on diplomatic engagement, safeguarding its citizens abroad, and managing the economic impact of the ongoing conflict.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more details.
