Devendra Fadnavis orders probe after Mulund Metro pillar collapse; ₹5 lakh ex-gratia announced
Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an inquiry and announced ₹5 lakh ex-gratia after a Metro pillar segment collapse in Mumbai’s Mulund left one person dead and three injured.

A portion of a parapet segment from an under-construction Metro pillar collapsed around 12:15 pm near pier number P196 in the RAJV (Milan) area, close to the Mulund Fire Station in north-east Mumbai.
According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the segment fell onto a passing autorickshaw. One person died and three others sustained injuries. Two vehicles — an autorickshaw and a Skoda car — were severely damaged.
The deceased was identified by officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The injured were admitted to hospital, with one reported to be in critical condition.
Devendra Fadnavis’ response
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the incident as “very unfortunate” and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for the kin of the deceased and said the cost of medical treatment for the injured would be borne by the state government.
Fadnavis directed authorities to conduct a detailed inquiry into the structural failure. He stated that responsibility would be fixed if lapses in safety protocols were found. The Chief Minister also instructed officials to carry out safety audits at other Metro construction sites to prevent similar accidents.
Political reactions and safety concerns
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde termed the incident a case of “huge negligence” and questioned whether proper safety checks were carried out, particularly as the parapet segment had reportedly been installed just a day earlier.
Opposition leaders, including Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, criticised the state government and demanded accountability over infrastructure safety standards in the city.
Background: Metro expansion and safety scrutiny
Mumbai is currently undergoing large-scale Metro expansion aimed at easing congestion and improving urban connectivity. Several lines are under construction under the supervision of the MMRDA.
However, incidents at infrastructure sites have periodically raised concerns about construction quality and adherence to safety norms. The Mulund collapse has renewed scrutiny over project oversight and contractor compliance with structural and worker safety regulations.
Authorities have begun a formal probe, and further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
