New Delhi: Congress leader Udit Raj on Wednesday sparked controversy with a remark on India’s political stability amid unrest in neighbouring countries, including recent protests in Nepal.

“People are discussing the way in which the public has uprooted power in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Could something like that not happen in India? Some people are even expressing the possibility of it happening. In fact, the circumstances are just the same, and in some cases even more so, but our constitution prevents us from doing so. The roots of our democracy are very deep, which were planted by the Congress,” Udit Raj tweeted in Hindi.

The remarks come as Nepal faces growing unrest, with violent protests forcing Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli to resign. Security forces have patrolled streets nationwide, and curfews and other restrictions were imposed until Thursday morning.

The situation was triggered amid protests that began on September 8, 2025, in Kathmandu and other major cities, including Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj, following the government's imposition of a ban on major social media platforms, citing concerns over tax revenue and cybersecurity.

Till now, 30 people have been killed and over 1000 injured in clashes with security forces. Curfew was imposed in several cities, including Kathmandu, to control the situation, which will continue till Friday morning, as per a statement issued by the Nepalese Army.
