Mumbai: Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices were increased by ₹1 per kg on Saturday, adding further pressure on commuters and transport operators already affected by repeated hikes in petrol and diesel prices.

According to revised rates issued by Indraprastha Gas Limited, CNG in Delhi now costs ₹81.09 per kg. Prices in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad have risen to ₹89.70 per kg, while Gurugram will now see CNG priced at ₹86.12 per kg.

Third CNG hike in less than 10 days

This is the third increase in CNG prices within just over a week. Prices were first raised by ₹2 per kg on May 15, followed by another ₹1 per kg hike on May 17. With the latest revision, CNG prices in Delhi have crossed the ₹80 mark for the first time.

Diesel prices also increased sharply, with Delhi diesel reaching ₹92.49 per litre.

Why fuel prices are rising

The fresh revisions are linked to rising global crude oil and natural gas prices amid continuing tensions in West Asia and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.

India imports nearly 90 per cent of its crude oil needs, making domestic fuel prices highly dependent on global markets. Crude oil prices reportedly surged above $120 per barrel during the recent conflict before settling around the $104–110 range.

Impact on commuters and transport sector

The repeated hikes are expected to increase transportation and logistics costs across India. Auto-rickshaw drivers, taxi operators and commercial transporters using CNG are likely to face higher operating expenses.

Transport unions in Delhi-NCR have continued protests demanding a rollback of fuel price hikes, withdrawal of additional CNG charges and revision of taxi fares. Industry groups warned that rising operational costs are severely affecting drivers and small transport businesses.

Experts also warned that higher transport costs may eventually lead to increased prices of goods and services, adding to inflationary pressure on households.
