The iconic Nukra horse, famous for its gleaming white coat and grand presence at Indian weddings, could soon receive official recognition as a distinct indigenous horse breed. Scientists at the National Research Centre on Equines (NRCE), Bikaner, have completed the first scientific documentation of the breed, bringing it closer to becoming India's ninth recognised horse breed.

Researchers analysed more than 300 Nukra horses, recording key physical features including leg length, ear length and tail length. The report will now be submitted to the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) for final verification.

Experts say the Nukra stands apart from Marwari and Kathiawadi horses with its taller, sturdier build, calm temperament and striking milky-white coat with a pink nose and lips.

If approved, the recognition is expected to boost conservation efforts, encourage scientific breeding and improve the market value of the breed, which remains a favourite for weddings and ceremonial processions across India.
