Jharkhand dairy revolution: How a 90% female calf rate could change farming
Jharkhand adopts Sex-Sorted Semen Technology to increase female calf births and boost milk production in the state’s dairy sector.
Jharkhand is accelerating dairy development through advanced livestock technology. The Animal Husbandry Department has successfully implemented sex-sorted semen technology at the government livestock farm in Gauria Karma, Hazaribagh district. The initiative offers up to a 90 per cent chance of female calf births, helping improve dairy output and strengthen livestock farming.
Officials said the technology has reduced the impact of inbreeding and improved milk productivity through artificial insemination. Introduced in 2021, the breeding programme is now developing its third generation of Red Sindhi cattle, with a target milk-producing capacity of around 10 kilograms per cow.

The farm, established in 1955 for Red Sindhi breed conservation, currently produces nearly 270 litres of milk daily. Farmers say improved breeds are helping increase income and support self-help groups. The state government expects the initiative to create stronger livelihood opportunities across Jharkhand's dairy sector.
