Rising water levels in the Ghaghara and Saryu rivers have put flood-prone areas of Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh on alert, prompting authorities to intensify surveillance and emergency preparedness.

Officials said there is no immediate flood threat, but precautionary measures have been strengthened as the monsoon gathers pace. With the Ghaghara and Saryu rivers swelling amid continuous monsoon rainfall, the Gonda district administration has stepped up flood preparedness across vulnerable villages. Officials said the Ghaghara is flowing around 30 cm below the danger mark, while the Saryu remains one metre below it, but surveillance along embankments has been intensified as a precaution.

District Magistrate Priyanka Niranjan said all flood-prone villages have been placed on high alert, and revenue teams, along with other departments, have completed pre-flood preparations to respond swiftly if water levels rise further.

For residents living along the riverbanks, annual flooding is a recurring challenge. As water levels increase, roads are often become submerged, forcing villagers to depend on boats provided by the administration for transport. Locals said more than 100 villages face flood risks every monsoon, making preparedness essential.
