XG’s Cocona comes out as transmasculine nonbinary in emotional birthday message

Japanese pop group XG’s member Cocona marked their twentieth birthday with a significant personal announcement, revealing that they identify as an AFAB transmasculine non-binary person.

The revelation was shared through a post on the group’s official social media page, where Cocona first thanked fans for their birthday wishes before addressing their gender identity.

 

Cocona is a member of the Japan-based global girl group XG, known for their rap-heavy performances and growing international presence. Since debuting with XG under XGALX in 2022, Cocona has become recognised for their strong rap delivery, distinctive style, and popularity across Asia, Europe, and the United States.

In the birthday post, Cocona said they had chosen to speak openly about their identity and confirmed that they underwent top surgery earlier this year. They explained that although they were born and perceived as female, the label never reflected who they truly are, adding that living in a more masculine way better aligns with their sense of self. Cocona described coming to terms with their identity as the most difficult experience of their life but said that accepting it allowed them to “open a new door”.

They also expressed gratitude for the support they received throughout their journey, acknowledging both their XG bandmates and their family for standing by them and helping them navigate the process.

Cocona ended the message by expressing hope that their words might offer comfort or inspiration to others who may be facing similar experiences, extending love and encouragement to anyone who needs it.
