Chennai: Light to moderate rainfall is set to continue across Tamil Nadu till December 12, with the northeast monsoon regaining momentum over the southern districts, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said on Sunday. Intermittent showers and overcast skies are likely to persist in several parts of the state over the next few days.

The RMC reported that Kollidam (Mayiladuthurai) and Uthuvil (Tirunelveli) registered the highest rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. Saturday, each recording 5 cm. Other southern and delta districts also saw scattered showers.

Meteorologists attributed the wet spell to a low-pressure system over the south Kerala coast, which is influencing weather patterns across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Under its impact, light rain with thunder and lightning may occur at isolated locations in the southern and some northern districts, Puducherry and Karaikal. From Sunday through December 12, light to moderate rain is expected in several pockets across the region.

Though widespread heavy rain is unlikely, scattered showers may continue, particularly along southern and coastal belts.

For Chennai, the forecast indicates partly cloudy skies and a chance of light rain with isolated thunderstorms, especially during evening and night hours. No major flooding threat has been issued, but residents are advised to exercise caution during brief downpours.

With the weather system expected to generate strong surface winds, the RMC has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea till December 10 along the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Kumari Sea. Squally winds and rough seas are likely to make marine operations risky.

Officials said the continued rainfall may help agriculture and improve storage in several districts. District administrations have been asked to stay vigilant for localised waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and other weather-related issues.

The RMC said it will continue to monitor the system and issue updates as needed.
