James Cameron has revealed a backup plan for the future of the Avatar franchise, promising a press conference to detail his plans for Avatar 4 and 5 if the films are never made, following the massive success of Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Despite Avatar: Fire and Ash crossing $500 million worldwide in its first nine days, James Cameron remains cautious about the franchise’s continuation. The Oscar-winning director confirmed he would hold a press conference to reveal the planned storylines for Avatar 4 and 5 if they are ultimately not produced.

“I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,” Cameron told Entertainment Weekly, emphasising that the future of Pandora depends on audience reception and box office performance.

Box office success of Fire and Ash

The third installment of the franchise has performed strongly globally. As of December 27, Avatar: Fire and Ash earned $544.3 million worldwide, including $153.7 million domestically in the U.S. and $390.6 million internationally, with China contributing $71 million. India also contributed approximately ₹119.93 crore ($14.4 million) across English, Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil screenings.

The film benefited from the holiday season, with Christmas Day alone earning $24 million in the U.S., marking one of the biggest Christmas Day (non-opening) grosses in history. Analysts project the film could surpass $1 billion globally, with potential to join the franchise’s billion-dollar club.

Cameron open to other storytelling formats

If the films do not continue, Cameron is open to exploring the rich lore of Pandora through books, citing the deep cultural and character details he has developed. “There’s so much culture and backstory… I’d love to do something at that level of granular detail,” he said, though he noted the challenge in finding a viable business model for book adaptations.

Avatar: Fire and Ash features Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, and Cliff Curtis, combining familiar faces with Cameron’s cutting-edge cinematic technology. Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Studios continue to support the franchise’s ambitious vision, leveraging both spectacle and storytelling to attract audiences.

The road ahead for Pandora

Cameron’s cautious optimism and backup plans reflect the high stakes of the franchise. Whether through films or alternative storytelling methods, the fate of Avatar 4 and 5 remains a subject of keen interest among fans and industry watchers, ensuring that the saga of Pandora remains one of Hollywood’s most closely followed epics.
