Aamir Khan Productions released the trailer for "Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos" on December 18, reuniting the makers of 2011's "Delhi Belly" for a spy comedy that marks actor Imran Khan's return to cinema after more than a decade.

The film, set for theatrical release on January 16, 2026, represents Emmy-winning comedian Vir Das' directorial debut alongside co-director Kavi Shastri. Das also stars as the title character, a wannabe international spy who has failed the MI7 exam seven times and is sent on a mission to Goa, unaware of his Indian roots.

A Comedy Born From Collaboration

The two-and-a-half-minute trailer opens with Das' character assembling a rifle but forgetting the trigger, setting the tone for the film's approach to the spy genre. According to Filmfare, the narrative follows Happy Patel as he navigates "violence, the Goa Police, and an unexpected romantic turn" while sporting a Bob Dylan-inspired hairstyle.

Mona Singh appears in what Republic World describes as a "raw avatar" as a gangster character named Mama, marking a departure from her previous roles. Mithila Palkar plays the romantic interest, while Sharib Hashmi and rapper Srushti Tawade round out the supporting cast.

The trailer's release generated immediate buzz on social media, with fans particularly excited about Khan's appearance. India Today reported that his comeback has become "one of the most talked-about aspects of the film". His last theatrical release was "Katti Batti" opposite Kangana Ranaut in 2015.

Delhi Belly Reunion

"Happy Patel" marks the second collaboration between Aamir Khan Productions and Das, following their work on "Delhi Belly," which also featured Imran Khan. The 2011 film, produced by Aamir Khan Productions, became a cult hit despite its adult certification.

Co-written by Amogh Ranadive and Das, "Happy Patel" uses bilingual humor and satire to flip the popular "India is not for beginners" meme, suggesting instead that India welcomes chaos and confusion. Aamir Khan Productions shared the trailer with the caption: "He is a chef, he is an agent (kind of), he is a hero (probably), he is HAPPY PATEL".

Das, who won the International Emmy for Best Comedy in 2023 for his Netflix special "Vir Das: Landing," previously acted in films including "Go Goa Gone," "Badmaash Company," and "Delhi Belly". Aamir Khan Productions has previously produced critically acclaimed films including "Lagaan," "Taare Zameen Par," "Dangal," and "Secret Superstar".
