As Malayalam audiences step into the Onam holidays, Nivin Pauly’s 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit' and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s 'Khalifa' are offering two very different big-screen moods, and the early response shows there may be room for both.

This Onam, Malayalam cinema has offered audiences two very different reasons to head to the theatres.
On one side is 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit', a gentle romantic comedy led by Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju. On the other is 'Khalifa', a larger-scale action drama fronted by Prithviraj Sukumaran, built around power and crime. The opening box office numbers reflect the contrast, but they also point to something more interesting about this festive season: audiences are showing up for both kinds of films.
Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju’s 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit' opened with an estimated India net collection of ₹4.70 crore on Day 1. 'Khalifa', meanwhile, saw its domestic collections dip on its second day but has still built a worldwide gross of ₹19.90 crore in two days.
Nivin Pauly’s Onam release finds its audience
For Nivin Pauly, 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit' arrives at a particularly interesting point. The actor has been enjoying a positive run and the response to his latest release has added to the excitement around his recent comeback.
The Girish A.D.-directed romantic comedy collected an estimated ₹4.70 crore India net on its opening day, with an India gross of ₹5.45 crore. Kerala led the numbers with ₹4.40 crore in gross collections, while Karnataka contributed ₹60 lakh. Tamil Nadu added ₹20 lakh, followed by contributions from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and the rest of India.
The film was screened across 1,507 shows and recorded an overall occupancy of around 58% on Day 1.
What stands out in the occupancy pattern is how the audience turnout grew through the day. Morning shows recorded around 30% occupancy, which rose to 45.92% in the afternoon. Evening shows touched 64.33%, while night shows registered the strongest turnout at 81.92%.
That upward movement through the day fits the response surrounding the film. 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit' has been received as a softer, easy-going Onam watch, with Nivin returning to a space that many viewers have closely associated with him: romance, humour and everyday relationships.

The film follows Ashley, played by Mamitha Baiju, who returns to Kerala with her family and becomes neighbours with Justin, portrayed by Nivin Pauly. As Ashley develops feelings for Justin, the story moves through first love, second chances and relationships shaped by familiar surroundings.
Mathrubhumi English’s review also placed the focus on the film’s gentle romantic tone and Nivin’s return to a space that recalls the charm audiences have enjoyed from him in the past.
For viewers heading into the Onam holidays, the film appears to be finding its place as a lighter choice, driven by romance, comedy and a familiar emotional setting rather than scale or spectacle.
'Khalifa' takes the bigger, louder route
If 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit' is built around warmth and romance, 'Khalifa' heads in the opposite direction.
Prithviraj Sukumaran’s action film opened with an estimated India net of ₹5.35 crore on Day 1 before collecting ₹2.30 crore on Day 2, marking a 57% drop in domestic earnings. Its two-day India net now stands at ₹7.65 crore, while the India gross is ₹8.90 crore.
The film’s overseas performance has given its overall run a stronger push. 'Khalifa' added ₹4 crore overseas on Day 2, taking its total overseas gross to ₹11 crore. With domestic and international collections combined, the film has reached a worldwide gross of ₹19.90 crore after two days.
Kerala remained its biggest market on Day 2, contributing ₹2.40 crore in gross earnings. Karnataka added ₹17 lakh, Tamil Nadu ₹5 lakh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana ₹3 lakh, while the rest of India contributed ₹5 lakh.
Occupancy also showed that 'Khalifa' performed best later in the day. While morning shows recorded 11.33% occupancy, the figure rose through the afternoon and evening before night shows reached 46.42%.

Directed by Vysakh, 'Khalifa' follows Mambarakkal Aamir Ali, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran, a textile businessman whose life takes a dramatic turn after his father's arrest exposes a hidden connection to gold smuggling. Mohanlal also appears in a cameo role.
Mathrubhumi English’s review of the film highlighted its larger-than-life presentation, placing it in a very different space from the more intimate world of 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit'.
Two films, two moods, one Onam season
The more interesting story behind these early numbers may be the way the two films are serving very different audiences during the same festive window.
Nivin Pauly’s 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit' is leaning into romance, humour and a gentler emotional world, while Prithviraj’s 'Khalifa' brings action, crime and a more ambitious cinematic scale. One is building its appeal around a relaxed, feel-good theatre experience, while the other is designed around intensity and spectacle.
For Nivin Pauly, the Day 1 response adds another encouraging chapter to the conversation around his recent run of films. The strong night occupancy and positive audience response suggest that 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit' could continue to benefit as the Onam holidays progress.
'Khalifa', despite its Day 2 domestic drop, has already crossed the ₹19 crore mark worldwide, with overseas markets contributing significantly to its total.

The Onam box office race, therefore, is not shaping up as a simple one-film story. It is becoming a choice between moods, with audiences deciding whether they want to spend the holiday with a gentle romance or step into a louder world of action and power.
The coming days will show how far both films can travel, but their opening numbers have already set up an interesting festive box office battle.
