The cancellation of NEET (UG) 2026 has led to mixed reactions among candidates in Kerala, with students expressing both relief and concern over the sudden development.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the examination held on May 3 after allegations of a paper leak. A CBI inquiry has been ordered into the reported "irregularities". The exam, meant for admission to undergraduate medical courses, will be conducted again on dates yet to be announced.

In Kerala, where more than 1 lakh students appeared for the exam, some students see the fresh exam as another opportunity.

Anviya Sady from Thrissur said, “Though it may create distress among repeaters, first-timers like me will have an option of being more prepared for the new exam.” She added that Physics felt slightly difficult and said she would now focus more on that subject.

There are also students who feel this year’s paper was on the easier side. While an easier NEET exam may look like relief, it often increases pressure because MBBS seats are limited and competition remains very high.

When the paper is easy, cut-offs usually rise as more students score well. Even a small difference of one or two marks can cause a big change in rank. This makes the margin for error very small. A score that seemed safe earlier may not be enough this time.

“An easier NEET exam results in a higher cut-off. I expect a tougher or moderate level fresh exam,” said Anna from Malappuram.

However, not all candidates are comfortable with the fresh exam. Several students said the sudden decision has increased pressure, burdening the preparation cycle. “We have already lost what we memorised. There is a lot of tension for exams like this and going through it again is stressful. We hope that there will be time to prepare,” said Niranjana K from Kozhikode, a student repeating for the second time.

There are also concerns over communication gaps. Candidates are yet to receive official email communication from the NTA about the cancellation, even though the announcement has been made public. The new exam date and detailed schedule are still awaited.

Some students are abroad due to personal emergencies. With the new date not yet announced, they say planning return travel and ensuring participation in the fresh exam may become difficult.
