The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sought an explanation from the Indian U-19 team management following the side’s one-sided defeat against Pakistan in the final of the U-19 Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday.

Led by Ayush Mhatre, India entered the summit clash as overwhelming favourites after dominant wins in all four previous matches, including a 90-run victory over Pakistan in the group stage. However, the final told a starkly different story as India were comprehensively outplayed by the Farhan Yousaf-led Pakistan side and suffered a 191-run hammering.

Captain and coach likely to be questioned

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the decision to review the team’s performance was taken during the BCCI Apex Council meeting on Monday. The board is expected to go beyond the standard post-tournament report submitted by team manager Salil Datar.

BCCI officials are likely to directly question head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and captain Ayush Mhatre over the team’s performance in the final, which has been described internally as unacceptable given the side’s form heading into the match.

Unsportsmanlike conduct under scrutiny

The review may also examine allegations of unsportsmanlike conduct by some Indian players during the final. The report suggests that verbal exchanges took place after dismissals, with Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi allegedly involved in heated words with Pakistani players following dismissals by bowler Ali Raza.

The BCCI is understood to be keen on reinforcing discipline and on-field behaviour, particularly at the junior level.

Match recap: Pakistan dominate final

After winning the toss, India opted to field, a decision that backfired as Pakistan posted a formidable 347/8. Opener Sameer Minhas starred with a blistering 172, putting the Indian bowling attack under sustained pressure.

In response, India’s much-vaunted batting line-up failed to cope despite a promising start from Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The innings collapsed rapidly, with India bowled out for just 156.

Focus shifts to U-19 World Cup

India’s U-19 team now faces a tight schedule, with the ICC U-19 World Cup set to begin on January 15 in Zimbabwe. The BCCI’s review is expected to identify technical, tactical and mental shortcomings that could hinder India’s bid for a sixth U-19 World Cup title.

The board is keen to ensure that the lessons from the Asia Cup final defeat are addressed swiftly as preparations intensify for the global tournament.
