Off-spinner Todd Murphy and fast bowler Jhye Richardson have been recalled to the 15-man squad.

Melbourne: Australia has made major changes to its squad for the upcoming Boxing Day Test against England, resting captain Pat Cummins and losing veteran spinner Nathan Lyon to a serious injury.
Captaincy Shift and Squad Recalls
With Cummins sidelined and Lyon out of the series, Cricket Australia announced a 15-man roster on Tuesday for the fourth Ashes Test, which begins December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Steve Smith has been appointed to lead the side in Cummins’ absence.
The national selectors have recalled off-spinner Todd Murphy and fast bowler Jhye Richardson to the squad. Meanwhile, all-rounders Michael Neser and Beau Webster, along with reserve pacer Brendan Doggett, have kept their spots despite not playing in the recent 82-run victory in Adelaide. That win gave Australia a definitive 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
Managing Injury and Workload
Cummins’ omission is a precautionary move as he continues to manage his workload following a recent back injury. The skipper indicated he might return for the final match in Sydney, starting January 4.
"We had a pretty aggressive build-up knowing that there's an Ashes series there to be won, and we thought that was worth it," Cummins remarked following the Adelaide win. "I doubt I'll be playing Melbourne, and then we'll have a chat about Sydney."
Jhye Richardson is a top candidate to fill the void left by the captain. Although the 29-year-old has been limited to just three Tests due to injuries, most recently against England in 2021, he remains highly regarded by the coaching staff.
Lyon’s Extended Absence
The loss of Nathan Lyon is a major blow to the bowling attack. The veteran spinner requires surgery on a torn right hamstring, an injury that will keep him off the field for a considerable duration.
Todd Murphy is expected to step in as the primary specialist spinner. Murphy has represented Australia in seven Tests, with his last appearance coming against Sri Lanka in Galle earlier this year.
Australia Squad (Fourth Test): Steve Smith (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster.
