United Arab Emirates authorities will observe the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhu Al Hijjah on May 17 using advanced observatories and astronomical technologies, a key step in determining the official dates for Hajj, Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha 2026.

Dubai: The UAE Council for Fatwa confirmed that the moon-sighting process will take place on the evening of Sunday, May 17, corresponding to the 29th day of Dhu Al Qadah in the Islamic calendar.
The observation process will be carried out in coordination with national observatories and specialised astronomy centres across the country using modern equipment and advanced viewing methods.

Advanced observatories to assist moon sighting
Several observatories across the UAE will participate in the crescent observation process.
These include:
- Al Khatm Astronomical Observatory in cooperation with the International Astronomy Centre
- Dubai Sky Views Observatory in partnership with Dubai’s Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department
- Sharjah Astronomical Observatory in collaboration with the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology
- The UAE follows a scientific-meets-tradition approach by combining astronomical calculations and high-tech observatories with traditional moon sighting practices.
Why the moon sighting matters
The sighting of the Dhu Al Hijjah crescent officially marks the beginning of the final and one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar.
The month is significant because it includes:
- The annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca
- The Day of Arafah, considered the holiest day for prayer and repentance
- Eid Al Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice
If the moon is sighted on May 17, Dhu Al Hijjah is expected to begin on Monday, May 18. If not, the month will begin on Tuesday, May 19 after Dhu Al Qadah completes 30 days.
Expected Eid Al Adha dates
Based on current astronomical calculations, the expected dates are:
- First day of Dhu Al Hijjah: May 18
- Arafah Day: May 26
- Eid Al Adha: May 27
However, the final announcement will depend on the official moon sighting confirmation by UAE authorities.
Public participation and astronomy awareness
The moon sighting process has also become an educational and public engagement activity in the UAE.
In Dubai and other emirates, residents are often invited to attend public observation events where experts explain how telescopes and astronomical calculations are used to identify the thin crescent moon shortly after sunset.
The annual sighting effectively acts as the official confirmation for the beginning of the Eid Al Adha holiday period across the country.
