Chicago: Doug Emhoff, the first "Second Gentleman" in U.S. history, stepped into the spotlight at the Democratic National Convention to promote his wife, Vice President Kamala Harris. Emhoff, who left his career as an entertainment lawyer to support Harris, spoke on Tuesday about her achievements and their modern blended family.
At 59, Emhoff shared his personal story and background, aiming to help the public get to know Harris better. His address is seen as a key moment for the Harris campaign as she steps into a more prominent role following her recent switch from Vice President Joe Biden's running mate to the top of the ticket.

"I love you and I'm so proud of how you're stepping up for all of us," Emhoff was to say, according to extracts released by the campaign.
"She did it for me and our family. Now that the country needs her, she's showing you what we already know: She's ready to lead, she brings both joy and toughness to this task, and she will be a great president who we will all be proud of."
Emhoff has been a vocal supporter of Harris since she was first selected as Biden’s running mate in 2020. He has been especially active in defending her against criticism from former President Donald Trump and other opponents.
"Mr Trump, I know you have so much trouble pronouncing her name," Emhoff said in a recent video, referring to Trump's habit of mispronouncing Kamala.
"After the election, you can just call her Madam President."
Emhoff and Harris, who met on a blind date in 2013 and married the next year, have a blended family that includes his children from a previous marriage, Cole and Ella. They affectionately call Harris "Momala."
In an unusual show of unity, Emhoff's ex-wife, Kerstin Emhoff, has publicly defended Harris from attacks, praising her as a loving and nurturing stepmother. Cole Emhoff also recorded a video message to introduce his father, reflecting on how their lives changed dramatically after the blind date that brought Kamala into their lives.
Emhoff has faced challenges, including stepping away from a lucrative career where he earned about $1 million annually. Vice President Biden offered support during this transition, acknowledging the difficulty of leaving such a high-profile job.
Since Harris made history as the first female, Black, and South Asian Vice President, Emhoff has become a prominent figure himself, including being the first Jewish spouse of a U.S. President or Vice President. He has taken on significant roles, such as speaking out against anti-Semitism and leading ceremonial duties like representing the U.S. at the closing of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Now, Emhoff will take centre stage as Democrats rally around Harris in her new role.
