US President Donald Trump has claimed that both Iran and Israel are seeking an immediate ceasefire, even as fresh exchanges of fire threatened to unravel a fragile truce and reignite wider conflict across West Asia.

Washington DC: The conflict between Iran and Israel entered a critical phase on its 100th day as renewed military exchanges raised fears of a broader regional war, prompting fresh diplomatic efforts led by the United States.
US President Donald Trump said both countries are interested in implementing an immediate ceasefire and indicated that negotiations aimed at securing a broader peace agreement are progressing. However, he warned that "ignorance or stupidity" could still derail the process before a final deal is reached.

Trump's remarks came after Israel and Iran exchanged direct strikes in what was the most serious escalation since a US-brokered ceasefire was established two months ago. The latest clashes reportedly included attacks on military and energy-related targets, raising concerns about regional stability and global energy supplies.
Iran announces halt to offensive operations
In a significant development, Iran's military command announced that it would suspend offensive operations against Israel. However, Tehran also warned that any further Israeli attacks would trigger a stronger military response.
Iranian officials maintained that recent strikes were carried out in response to what they described as violations of the existing ceasefire framework. At the same time, Iranian authorities accused the United States of backing Israeli actions and contributing to the escalation.
How the latest escalation unfolded
The renewed tensions followed Israeli airstrikes in Beirut's southern suburbs, which were followed by Iranian retaliatory attacks. The exchange quickly expanded into a broader cycle of strikes and counterstrikes involving military installations and infrastructure targets.
The flare-up has complicated ongoing diplomatic efforts to permanently end a conflict that began on February 28 and has since become one of the most serious security crises in the region.
Global concerns grow
The conflict has triggered international concern due to its impact on civilian populations, regional security and global energy markets. Rising tensions have also increased fears of disruptions to critical shipping routes and oil supplies, particularly in the Gulf region.
India called for immediate de-escalation and urged all parties to return to diplomacy. The Ministry of External Affairs said the conflict has already caused significant human suffering and has adversely affected the global economy and energy security.
While Trump's statement suggests momentum towards a ceasefire, the situation remains highly volatile. The announcement by Iran to halt offensive operations may provide a temporary opening for diplomacy, but continued mistrust, military posturing and conflicting narratives from all sides mean the path to a lasting peace agreement remains uncertain.
