Fruit markets in Malappuram district are experiencing heightened activity ahead of Ramadan, with a wide range of imported fruits adding variety to seasonal demand. Traders say foreign fruits are increasingly popular during the fasting month, when fruits form a key part of iftar meals.

Among the imported varieties of fruits available in local markets are China’s Red Globe grapes, Iranian apples, Thai lychee, Thai tamarind, kiwi, green apples and Vietnamese red dragon fruit. Kenyan butter fruit is priced at ₹420 per kg, while African pear is selling at ₹220 per kg and Australian oranges at ₹180 per kg.

China’s Red Globe grapes are priced at ₹280 per kg. Green apples are being sold at ₹320 per kg. Vietnamese red dragon fruit is available at ₹220 per kg and white dragon fruit at ₹160 per kg. Apples from Iran are priced at ₹180 per kg, while Afghan and Polish apples are selling at ₹200 per kg. Kashmiri apples are available at ₹160 per kg.

Alongside imported fruits, regular seasonal varieties are also in strong demand. Watermelons arriving from Coimbatore and Dindigul are priced between ₹22 and ₹25 per kg, compared to ₹15 per kg during the same period last year. Papaya is being sold at ₹30 per kg. Pineapple and bananas are also widely available.

Last year’s Ramadan coincided with peak mango season, but this year the mango season has only just begun. Currently, only the Moovandan variety is available in the market at ₹80 per kg.

K. Ashiq, Director of K.M.K. Fruits in Tirur, said that demand for imported fruits has increased during Ramadan. He noted that while premium fruits attract attention, varieties with relatively lower prices are seeing higher sales volumes.

Traders expect demand to remain steady through the fasting period as households stock up on fruits for daily iftar preparations.
