Kochi: Kerala is set to witness widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts amid intensifying monsoon conditions.

The India Meteorological Department has placed Kannur and Kasaragod under a yellow alert, warning of isolated heavy rainfall during the day.

According to the IMD, these districts could receive between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, raising concerns about waterlogging and localised flooding in vulnerable areas.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and closely monitor weather updates.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms likely across Kerala

Apart from heavy rainfall, the weather department has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in several parts of the state.

Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph are also expected in isolated areas, potentially affecting transportation and outdoor activities.

The IMD warned that rapidly changing weather conditions could lead to temporary disruptions and urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.

Rain expected in multiple districts

Moderate rainfall is likely in isolated parts of:

  • Alappuzha
  • Kottayam
  • Ernakulam
  • Thrissur
  • Malappuram
  • Kozhikode
  • Kannur
  • Kasaragod

Light rainfall is expected across several other districts as monsoon activity continues to strengthen.

The weather department's five-day forecast indicates continued rainfall across Kerala, with district-specific warnings likely to be updated based on evolving weather conditions.

More districts under alert later this week

The IMD has also issued advance yellow alerts for several districts over the coming days.

  • June 25: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam
  • June 26: Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod

Officials said these districts could experience isolated heavy rainfall as monsoon conditions intensify.

Fishing ban remains in force

Authorities have continued restrictions on fishing activities along the coasts of Kerala and Lakshadweep due to rough sea conditions and adverse weather.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until further notice.

The warning comes amid forecasts of strong winds and turbulent marine conditions associated with the advancing monsoon.

Thunderstorm safety advisory issued

The IMD has issued a series of precautions for residents during thunderstorms and lightning activity.

People are advised to:

  • Move indoors immediately when lightning is observed
  • Avoid open fields, terraces and water bodies
  • Stay away from trees during thunderstorms
  • Keep doors and windows closed during strong winds
  • Disconnect electrical appliances when possible
  • Avoid using landline telephones during thunderstorms
  • Refrain from parking vehicles under trees

Authorities have also urged parents to ensure children do not play outdoors when dark clouds or lightning activity is present.

Weather officials expect rainfall activity to continue across Kerala over the next several days as the southwest monsoon remains active.

With heavy showers forecast for northern districts and additional alerts already issued for later in the week, authorities are maintaining close monitoring of weather conditions across the state.
