The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), citing the India Meteorological Department, has urged residents to remain cautious after a fresh orange alert was issued for Mumbai and neighbouring Raigad district.
The warning, issued at 7 am on Tuesday, remains in effect for three hours and forecasts thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph in isolated areas.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions and to follow official advisories.
Monsoon advances towards Mumbai
The alert comes as the southwest monsoon continues to strengthen and move further across western and central India.
According to the IMD, the monsoon has advanced into additional parts of Maharashtra, Telangana and the central Arabian Sea while covering the remaining areas of Karnataka.
Weather officials said conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance into more parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, within the next 48 hours.
The monsoon is also expected to progress into remaining parts of Telangana and Odisha, along with additional areas of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar.
Heavy rain likely across Maharashtra

For Marathwada, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds has been forecast through June 24.
Mumbai already witnesses thunderstorms
Several parts of Mumbai, including Bandra East, experienced pre-monsoon showers, lightning and thunderstorms on Monday.
The rainfall brought temporary relief from humid conditions but also resulted in waterlogging and traffic disruptions in some areas.
Cloudy skies and intermittent showers continued across parts of the city on Tuesday morning as monsoon activity intensified.
Nearby Lonavala also recorded rainfall amid changing weather conditions across the region.
Fishermen warned against venturing into sea
The IMD has issued a separate warning for fishermen along the South Maharashtra-Goa coastline.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea from June 22 to June 26 due to squally weather conditions.
Wind speeds are expected to reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts potentially touching 60 kmph in some coastal areas.
Authorities warned that rough sea conditions could pose significant risks to fishing vessels and small boats.
Risk of flooding and transport disruption
The weather department has warned that intense rainfall could lead to localised flooding and waterlogging, particularly in low-lying urban areas.
Potential impacts include:
- Waterlogging in vulnerable locations
- Flash floods in isolated areas
- Traffic congestion and road disruptions
- Delays to rail, air and ferry services
- Damage to standing crops and horticulture
- Rough sea conditions along the coast
Residents have been advised to stay away from water bodies during thunderstorms and avoid sheltering near vulnerable structures.
Authorities urge caution
The BMC and IMD have urged citizens to monitor weather updates closely and follow all safety advisories.
Emergency agencies remain on alert as Mumbai prepares for a stronger monsoon spell in the coming days.
With rainfall activity expected to intensify further, officials are keeping a close watch on conditions across the city and surrounding districts.
