
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Tourism Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) to bring innovative technology solutions to the state's tourism sector, tapping into the growing startup ecosystem.
Tourism Director Sikha Surendran and KSUM CEO Anoop Ambika officially signed the MoU, in the presence of Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas, at an event held in Thiruvananthapuram, according to an official statement.

A major outcome of the MoU is the establishment of an innovation centre, which is the first initiative of its kind in India. This centre will foster the development of tech-driven solutions tailored to enhance the tourism experience in Kerala.
Promoting caravan tourism, remote work
One of the key objectives is the promotion of caravan tourism. The agreement aims to set up modern, well-equipped caravan parks, offering a unique travel experience designed to attract both domestic and international tourists. This initiative is in line with global travel trends.
The partnership will also focus on "workation/startup pods," which combine scenic accommodation with co-working spaces to meet the growing demand for remote work in picturesque settings.
Focus on sustainability, tech-enabled solutions
The partnership also places a strong emphasis on sustainability. It will include eco-friendly sanitation systems and the introduction of tech-enabled cleaning solutions, promoting environmentally responsible tourism.
Another highlight of the MoU is the introduction of AI-powered multilingual information kiosks. These kiosks will provide tourists with seamless, accessible assistance, ensuring a convenient and well-informed travel experience.
Establishment of freedom square, hospitality centre
A central element of the MoU is the creation of the Freedom Square, a hub for collaboration and innovation. This space will foster entrepreneurial growth and innovation within the tourism sector.
The agreement also includes the establishment of a Hospitality and Tourism Innovation Centre, designed to nurture innovative solutions that can enhance operational efficiency and customer engagement within the tourism industry.
Minister's vision for technology-driven tourism growth
Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas emphasised that integrating technology and innovative ideas from Kerala’s vibrant startup ecosystem will accelerate the growth of the tourism sector. He noted that this MoU will be a catalyst for driving technology-led changes in the industry, especially as the state focuses on attracting more foreign tourists.
“The collaboration is set to bring about a major transformation in the state’s tourism sector, enabling a much more hassle-free travel experience and boosting tourist footfall,” said Minister Riyas. Minister Riyas further stated that the partnership will help develop attractive tourism products and promote them globally, leveraging innovative technologies.
Tech solutions to address key tourism challenges
Tourism Director Sikha Surendran also highlighted the importance of this collaboration. “This MoU is a significant step towards integrating tech-based solutions into the tourism sector. Our top priority is to address issues in areas such as basic amenities, security, and enhancing the overall tourism experience,” she said.
The Tourism Department is also considering the development of a "literature circuit," where tourists can explore destinations connected to Malayalam literary classics. This initiative will cater to global audiences, as many of these literary works have been translated into various languages.
The partnership between Kerala Tourism and KSUM marks a significant move towards a technology-driven future for the state's tourism industry, promising exciting new experiences for both locals and visitors.
