Thiruvananthapuram: Despite the Kerala government's decision to impose a 'dies non' penalty, thousands of government employees have gone on strike on Wednesday, protesting what they claim is the denial of their rights and benefits.
KPCC president K Sudhakaran inaugurated a meeting of striking employees led by SETO in Kannur, as part of the statewide protest. Meanwhile, striking government employees staged a demonstration at the Kasaragod Civil Station, organised by the Joint Council. In Thiruvananthapuram, employees gathered in front of the Secretariat, raising slogans in protest.
The strike, called by the Joint Council -- a service organisation associated with the ruling CPI as well as opposition groups -- has seen participation from a number of government employees and teachers. They are demanding the removal of the contributory pension scheme and the reinstatement of the old pension system.
Other key demands include starting the 12th pay revision process and placing the responsibility of the Medical Insurance Scheme for State Employees and Pensioners (Medisep) under government control.

In an effort to curb the strike, the government has issued an order declaring that any unauthorised leave taken during this period will be treated as 'dies non,' meaning those employees will not be paid for the day.
