Thiruvananthapuram: Greeshma, the convict in the high-profile Sharon Raj murder case, has become the first convict of 2025 to be lodged at Attakulangara Women’s Jail. As the first prisoner to be sentenced in the new year, Greeshma has been assigned the number C 1/25, marking her entry into the jail.

Greeshma, who was previously held with remand prisoners, has now been placed in cell number 11, alongside other convicts serving various sentences. The jail currently holds 23 convicts, with 39 admissions having occurred last year. Despite the usual practice of isolating those sentenced to death, Greeshma is being kept in a regular cell due to her potential appeal to the higher courts for a sentence reduction. She will remain in this cell until her case is reconsidered.

No bail or parole until High Court reviews case

Greeshma's bail was revoked by the Neyyatinkara Sessions Court, and she was sent back to jail following her conviction. Until the High Court examines her case, she will not be granted bail or parole. A two-member bench of the High Court is set to review the matter, determining her fate. The decision to grant bail or parole rests entirely on this review.

Current prison conditions, Greeshma’s daily life

Despite her new location in the women's jail, Greeshma is not assigned any prison work at present. She has spent most of her time in her cell, with limited activities. On a recent visit to the prison pharmacy, she purchased medicine for body aches. Ongoing renovations in the prison have meant that only a portion of the cells are in use for now.

Death row inmates are transferred to solitary confinement only after their mercy petition to the President is rejected. While they will receive the same treatment as regular prisoners inside the prison, they will be subject to more intense surveillance than other convicts.

The prison also houses Rafika, who was sentenced to death for the murder of two people in Vizhinjam.
