Thiruvananthapuram: An employee at the Kerala Secretariat was seriously injured on Thursday afternoon when a closet in the toilet of Annex 1 collapsed. The injured woman, an officer from the local self government department, was immediately taken to the General Hospital and later moved to a private hospital. The injury required nine stitches.

Although Annex 1 is a relatively new building, employees claim that the toilets are frequently damaged, leading to accidents. This is not the first incident; on October 4, the ceiling in an office in the old Assembly building collapsed, severely injuring the Additional Secretary.

Frequent accidents spark employee protests

Employees at the Secretariat have raised concerns about the poor maintenance and renovation work, which they say is leading to repeated accidents. Thursday's incident marks the second accident in the toilet in just two months. Employees are frustrated with the government’s negligence in maintaining the Secretariat buildings, despite spending large amounts on repairs.

Kerala Secretariat Employees Association has voiced its dissatisfaction, stating that while regular exterior maintenance like painting is done, essential repairs and renovations inside the building, including offices, toilets, and dining halls, are often ignored. Association President Irshad M.S. and General Secretary Purushothaman K.P. have called for a proper renovation plan, emphasising that repairs should not only focus on the offices of ministers and senior officials but should extend to all areas of the Secretariat.
