Malappuram: The Southern Railway General Manager has confirmed that the proposal to start the MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) service on the Shoranur-Nilambur route is being urgently reviewed. This decision follows a letter from Malappuram MP, E. T. Mohammed Basheer, who urged for the charging of the route, which was electrified eight months ago.
Electrification completed, service delayed
The electrification project on the Shoranur-Nilambur route, which began in 2022, was completed earlier this year, with a trial run conducted on March 31. Despite the successful completion of most of the work, the delay in commissioning the service has raised concerns.
In his letter to the Southern Railway General Manager, Basheer emphasised the need to start charging the route without any delay, as the electrification is already in place. He also called for the completion of the track substation work in Melattur at the earliest to ensure the timely launch of the service.
