The CPI has indicated a likely drop in its Kerala Assembly tally, even as internal dissent within the party begins to surface ahead of counting.

Kannur: The Communist Party of India (CPI), a key ally in Kerala’s ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), has struck a cautious tone in its post-poll review, signalling a potential decline in its performance in the recently held Assembly elections.
Polling for the 140-member Kerala Assembly took place on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. According to the party’s internal assessment, the CPI expects to win around 10 of the 24 seats it contested, a drop from its previous tally that could impact its standing within the coalition.

If the projections hold, the party could see a decline of seven seats compared to its earlier performance. Such a result may shift the balance within the LDF, where the CPI is the second-largest constituent after the CPIM.
Political observers note that a reduced tally could influence the party’s role in decision-making within the ruling alliance, depending on the overall performance of the front.
Internal dissent comes to the fore
The review has also brought underlying tensions within the party into focus. Sections of the CPI have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of state secretary Binoy Viswam, with concerns building over recent months.
While the party leadership has not officially acknowledged any internal divisions, the anticipated electoral outcome may intensify calls for introspection and organisational changes.
Ministers likely to retain seats
Despite the subdued outlook, the CPI has identified a key positive. All four of its sitting ministers who contested the elections are expected to retain their seats.
Party leaders believe this could provide a degree of continuity and stability within the LDF government, even if the CPI’s overall presence in the Assembly declines.
Implications for LDF dynamics
The CPI has, at times over the past decade, faced criticism for its perceived silence on certain decisions under the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. However, the party has also asserted its position on key issues, including influencing policy decisions within the government.
With counting day approaching, the CPI leadership is expected to focus on managing internal concerns while preparing for the final electoral outcome. The eventual results will determine not only the party’s legislative strength but also its influence within Kerala’s ruling coalition.
