New Delhi: At the CPM Central Committee meeting, it was observed that the setback faced by the Left in Kerala amounted to the party being “corrected by its cadres”.

The CPM state leadership, however, maintained that the electoral reversal was not due to anti-incumbency sentiment. This explanation was presented in the report submitted by the General Secretary at the Central Committee meeting, which began on Friday.

During the discussions, several members, including those from Kerala, criticised the assessment. They said the election results reflected a serious organisational warning, with defeats even in party strongholds suggesting that the cadre base had effectively “corrected” the party’s course. Four representatives from Kerala participated in the discussions on the first day.

While the criticism highlighted the unexpected victories of rebel candidates, the state unit’s position, as reflected in the General Secretary’s report, described those who contested and won as rebels as having “backstabbed” the party, characterising their actions as part of a planned move.

Amid rising criticism in district committees in Kerala, including personal attacks on senior Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan and state secretary M. V. Govindan, the report submitted to the Central Committee rejected such individual-level blame. Instead, it attributed responsibility collectively to the party.

The party also assessed that the Left became politically marginalised in West Bengal as electoral contests increasingly turned into a Trinamool Congress–BJP battle. The report further criticised the Congress party’s approach in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, describing it as irresponsible given its leadership role in the INDIA alliance. In contrast, the Kerala unit’s report described the second Pinarayi Vijayan-led government as one that has implemented several public welfare schemes.

The Central Committee meeting is scheduled to conclude on Sunday.

Solidarity with Cuba

The CPM Central Committee also condemned what it described as threats of American imperialism against Cuba.

In a resolution, the party expressed solidarity with the Cuban people and the leadership of the Cuban revolution. It termed the indictment issued by the US Department of Justice against Cuban revolutionary leader Raul Castro as illegal and shocking. It also referred to recent remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump, in which he allegedly said that “Cuba is in our minds and we will attack.”
