Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly V D Satheesan on Sunday alleged that the state government inaugurated a township built for 2024 Wayanad landslide victims to “mislead” the public.

He said the Kerala government had publicised the housing project ahead of elections despite construction not being fully complete.

The Wayanad Model Township at Elton Estate was developed nearly two years after the devastating Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslide, with 178 houses handed over at an event inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on March 1.

Speaking to reporters, Satheesan cited recent reports of cracks and leaks in the newly constructed houses and said the visit by Revenue Minister K Rajan was not sufficient, arguing that only engineering experts should assess structural issues.

He alleged that the houses were not yet fit for habitation and accused the government of staging a premature inauguration for political benefit.

“The allegation against us is that we could not begin our housing project even after laying the foundation stone. Nobody is living in the houses inaugurated by the Chief Minister as they are not ready. So, the inauguration was done to deceive people before the elections,” he said.

Satheesan further claimed the project was used for political publicity during the election period and demanded accountability from the Chief Minister and the state government.

On the investigation into the Sabarimala gold theft case, Satheesan said the probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) would not progress effectively.

He alleged that procedural delays allowed accused persons to obtain statutory bail and claimed that key evidence may have been lost.

He also questioned the ED’s role in politically sensitive cases, alleging selective enforcement in matters linked to the ruling LDF government.

Referring to earlier probes, including the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank case, Satheesan alleged that investigations slowed after political developments during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

He further accused the CPM of misleading the public and claimed that the truth regarding multiple corruption allegations would eventually come out.
