US Vice President JD Vance spoke to PM Narendra Modi about strengthening India-US ties, with discussions covering trade, defence, energy security, critical minerals and technology.
Washington DC: US Vice President JD Vance called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday to discuss strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership amid continuing tensions in West Asia.
The conversation covered several key areas of bilateral cooperation, including trade, defence, energy security, critical minerals and emerging technologies.

During the call, Modi also congratulated Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance on the birth of their son and conveyed his best wishes to the family.
Modi and Vance review bilateral ties
According to an Indian readout, the two leaders reviewed progress in the India-US strategic partnership and noted the continued momentum in high-level engagements.
They reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, defence, critical and emerging technologies, energy security and critical minerals.
Modi said on social media that the two sides had discussed ways to further deepen the partnership across key areas.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.
The US side had not immediately released details of the conversation.
Trade deal remains a key issue
It was not immediately clear whether the proposed India-US trade agreement was discussed during the call.
Modi and US President Donald Trump, during their meeting in France in June, had directed officials from both countries to work towards a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement at the earliest.
Trade negotiations have remained an important part of efforts to stabilise bilateral relations after tensions over tariffs and other economic measures.
India-US ties faced tensions
Relations between New Delhi and Washington had come under strain after the US imposed higher tariffs on Indian goods and Trump made repeated claims about his role in helping de-escalate the India-Pakistan military conflict in May 2025.
India maintained that the cessation of hostilities resulted from direct talks between India and Pakistan and rejected claims of US mediation.
Washington's immigration policies and its decision to raise the H-1B visa fee also contributed to tensions between the two countries.
Efforts to repair relations continue
Despite the disagreements, India and the US have continued efforts to rebuild ties and advance cooperation in areas of strategic and economic importance.
The latest Modi-Vance conversation comes against the backdrop of wider geopolitical tensions in West Asia and new regional security alignments.
The two sides are also seeking greater cooperation in areas such as critical minerals and emerging technologies, which have become increasingly important to their economic and national security interests.
