Indian Railways has clarified that WhatsApp-forwarded train ticket images and screenshots are not valid proof of travel during ticket inspections. Passengers must carry the original e-ticket, booking confirmation or a valid printed ticket to avoid penalties.
Indian Railways has advised passengers not to rely solely on WhatsApp-shared ticket images or screenshots while travelling. During ticket inspections, Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) will only accept the original electronic ticket generated through authorised railway booking platforms, a valid printed ticket purchased from railway counters, or other officially recognised booking records.

The clarification comes as many passengers increasingly save screenshots or forward ticket images via WhatsApp for convenience. Railways has stressed that these copies do not qualify as valid travel documents.
Why screenshots are not accepted
According to Indian Railways, screenshots and forwarded ticket images pose verification challenges because they can:
- Be edited or tampered with.
- Be shared among multiple people.
- Make real-time verification difficult.
- Be misused for fraudulent travel.
To prevent misuse, TTEs verify ticket details directly from the original booking records available through authorised railway systems.
What passengers should carry
Passengers travelling with e-tickets should keep any of the following ready during ticket checks:
- The original e-ticket in the IRCTC Rail Connect app.
- The booking confirmation SMS received after ticket booking.
- The ticket available on the authorised booking app or website.
- A printed copy of the original e-ticket.
- A valid government-issued photo identity card matching the passenger's details on the ticket.
Railways has reiterated that the name on the ticket must match the identity proof produced during verification.
What happens if you show only a WhatsApp screenshot?
Passengers unable to produce a valid ticket and relying only on a WhatsApp screenshot or forwarded image may be treated as travelling without a valid ticket.
Depending on the circumstances, they could be required to:
- Purchase a fresh ticket.
- Pay the prescribed penalty.
- Face action under railway rules if the ticket cannot be verified.
You can share tickets, but not use screenshots for verification
Indian Railways clarified that passengers are free to share ticket details with family members or friends through WhatsApp or other messaging platforms. However, the shared image itself is not considered valid proof of travel.
The traveller must have access to the original e-ticket, booking confirmation or another authorised record during ticket inspection.
Tips to avoid problems during your journey
To ensure a hassle-free journey, passengers should:
- Keep the original e-ticket on their mobile device.
- Save the booking confirmation SMS.
- Carry a valid government-issued photo ID.
- Ensure their phone remains charged throughout the journey.
- Avoid depending only on screenshots or forwarded ticket images.
As online ticket bookings continue to grow, Indian Railways says carrying the original booking record is the safest way to avoid delays, penalties and inconvenience during ticket checks.
