Abdul Kahar, who funded his studies by driving an autorickshaw on Karyavattom campus, has achieved his dream by earning the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

Abdul Kahar’s journey from a rickshaw driver to earning a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) at the University of Kerala’s Karyavattom campus is a remarkable story of perseverance, hard work, and determination.
A native of Kallara Pangodu of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kahar initially enrolled in Political Science in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic and financial difficulties forced him to pause his studies. Supporting his family—including his father Abdul Manaff, an auto driver, his mother Ramlath Beevi, and a younger sibling—he took up work as a coolie labourer and a vegetable vendor, eventually saving enough to buy an old autorickshaw.

Determined not to let hardships stop his academic dreams, Kahar re-enrolled at University of Kerala Karyavattom Campus, bringing his autorickshaw to campus. His vehicle became more than just transport; it was his means to fund both his studies and livelihood. Stationed in front of the Islamic and West Asian Studies department, he ferried students, faculty, and supplies across the sprawling 350-acre campus. From midday breaks to evenings, he drove across 55 departments, taking PhD students for field trips, carrying supplies for the college canteen, and ensuring that anyone in need could rely on him—even at late hours.
Kahar’s rickshaw, affectionately dubbed “Campus,” became a familiar presence for students and teachers alike. He would respond promptly to calls for rides, even skipping his own classes in case of emergencies. Beyond campus runs, he also worked for Uber at night, meticulously balancing work, studies, and sleep with the same precision as a meter charge.
Despite these challenges, Kahar excelled academically. He completed his postgraduate studies in Linguistics and earned a JRF in International Relations, a testament to his resilience and dedication. Reflecting on his achievement, he recalled the long hours and arduous labour, which ultimately led to a moment of triumph at the campus gate—a personal victory earned through persistence and hard work.
Looking ahead, Kahar hopes to join a central university for further studies. When asked whether he would take his autorickshaw to his next campus, he replied with characteristic determination: “If needed!”
Abdul Kahar’s story stands as a powerful example of how dedication, resourcefulness, and perseverance can overcome even the most difficult circumstances, inspiring students and educators alike.
