As the Union Budget approaches, brass traders in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad are expressing concern over a sustained decline in exports and are urging the government to announce relief measures to revive the struggling sector.

Moradabad, internationally recognised for its brass handicrafts, has witnessed a steady erosion of its traditional industry over the past several years. Traders say falling overseas demand, coupled with rising production and operational costs, has severely impacted business, pushing many artisans to seek work in other professions.

Exporters in the town note that shipments of brass products have dropped significantly, leaving several factories operating at minimal capacity. Many units, they claim, are finding it increasingly difficult to cover basic expenses.

Industry representatives recall that earlier government incentives had provided some protection against escalating raw material costs. However, they argue that the withdrawal or reduction of such support has added to the industry’s woes.

With Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman set to present the Union Budget next month, brass traders in Moradabad say they are pinning their hopes on policy interventions that can boost exports and help restore the town’s reputation as a major brassware hub.
